Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how deprivation is related with life satisfaction, focusing on the mediation effect of depression. This paper adopts the concept of deprivation which enables the researchers as well as policy makers to develop a multidimensional approach rather than narrowly focusing on poverty. For this purpose, we use Korea Welfare Panel Study Data (Wave 9) and conduct empirical analyses using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show the significant relationships among the absolute deprivation, depression and life satisfaction: the higher the level of absolute deprivation, the higher gets the level of having depression and the lower becomes the level of life satisfaction. In addition, the higher the level of depression, the lower gets life satisfaction. Results from the SEM analysis reveal that the relationship between absolute deprivation and life satisfaction is mediated by the depression whose effect is statistically significant. These findings indicate that interventions in terms of both material and affective support are required to increase life satisfaction of individuals: mental, affective interventions are as much important as material supports for the poor experiencing an absolute deprivation. Additionally, we suggest that more realistic criteria, reflecting the concept of deprivation, should be considered during the design stage of poverty policy.
